If you want to know everything there is to know about Westeros and Essos, then you’ll have to read more than the currently published A Song of Ice and Fire novels. There are several books that occur “in world” with ASOIAF, written or co-written by George RR Martin himself. So read everything listed below, and you’ll be all caught up. I’ve even included product links to make it easier for you. So whether you’re a Game of Thrones fan, or just buying for one, you’ll find everything you need right here.
We’ve split this guide into three sections: canon, the gray area, and other.
What does Canon mean?
Canon refers to officially sanctioned work. In the world of literature, it separates a novel sequel from, say, fan fiction you wrote last Tuesday and posted online.

A Few Final Notes about “Canon”
There are several other places to pick up tidbits of George RR Martin sanctioned content, ranging from mobile apps to author interviews, to video games. Sometimes it’s debatable how “official” the content is. Sometime it isn’t. For details, see this wikia article.
Also, GRRM has released several chapters from the as yet unpublished The Winds of Winter. You can read all of them here.
