While we got a glimpse at what Rick and Michonne are up to in the final episode of The Walking Dead, actress Danai Gurira revealed that the beloved couple’s spin-off show will be set in “another world.”

Speaking on the Deadline podcast, the Michonne actress hinted that the setting of the new yet-unnamed spin-off will be both familiar and exotic.

“[The new series is] very much rooted in the world we know of, and then and then another world that we don’t know yet,” she told the hosts.

Danai went on to explain an aspect of the spin-off that many fans are looking forward to: the love story. She even so far as to call it an “epic love story.”

“It’s definitely an epic love story,” she said. “It’s very much rooted in the world we know of, and then another world that we don’t know yet. I think it’s going to be… it has all the makings of the things that have always made the Walking Dead really great viewing so, you know, in terms of these characters, and this very particular world and the action that this world insists upon, in order to survive it. And simultaneously, it’s, you know, deeply intimate and really hones in on an intimate story. So yeah, I think it’ll be very satisfying. I hope so.”

Rick and Michonne

You might remember the circumstances revolving around Michonne’s disappearance from the show. After Rick was injured and presumed dead, Michonne (his love interest and the mother of his youngest child), refused to believe he died. When she got news that he was still alive, but captured, she set off to find him.

This storyline was originally set to be played out in a trilogy of “Rick Grimes movies,” but The Walking Dead’s creators opted instead to create a spin-off series starring both Rick and Michonne. Co-star Norman Reedus, who plays Daryl Dixon, has also hinted about the fact that his own spin-off will go in a “different direction” than the original series.

In the final episode of the show (Season 11, Episode 24), fans got a look at both Rick and Michonne as their search for each other continued. With word of an epic love story,m I’d say it’s a pretty safe bet to say they found each other.

While the Rick and Michonne spin-off still has no official name, it is expected to release some time in 2023.
