While Deepfake technology is both fascinating and frightening at the same time, one YouTuber has used the power for good by inserting Mel Gibson into Tom Hardy’s role in Mad Max: Fury Road.

The clip is only a minute and a half long, but it shows what we could have seen if Mel Gibson was kept in his iconic role as Max Rockatansky in the fourth Mad Max film.

Mel Gibson got his big break in 1979’s original Mad Max and grew the part to worldwide fame throughout the 80s with the follow-ups The Road Warrior and Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. But due to some unfortunate anger issues and racially charged rants, his role was given to Tom Hardy for Fury Road.

YouTuber Shamook has become known for his Deepfakes using the software DeepFaceLabs. The technology uses face mapping and artificial intelligence to create a near-perfect likeness of one person in place of another. Perhaps Shamook’s most famous work was done when he replaced Alden Ehrenreich’s face with a young Harrison Ford’s during a clip of the movie Solo: A Star Wars Story. That video currently sits at almost 3 million views in only 7 months.

Despite the entertaining side of this tech, Facebook has recently cracked down on Deepfake videos on its popular social media platform, citing the fact that they present a “significant challenge for our industry and society” as their popularity continues to grow.

And you thought it was just used for celebrity porn!
