The Mad Max universe is somewhat confusing when you get down to it. Was the first movie even post-apocalyptic? Where does Fury Road fit in if Max still has his interceptor? And why is the Gyro Captain and Jedediah both played by Bruce Spence in different sequels? Are we not supposed to notice?

But in the most recent iteration of the Mad Max world, George Miller wants to make sure that things line up. In the upcoming Furiosa prequel to Fury Road, we’ve already heard that the story will take place several years before the events of Fury Road and it will focus primarily on Furiosa’s character, but now we get the official plot synopsis that explains much more about what we can expect when the movie releases in 2024.

“As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus,” the official synopsis explains. “Sweeping through the Wasteland they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.”

So most of this dips into familiar territory for Mad Max fans. The Green Place and the Citadel were prominent in Fury Road, but a biker horde led by the Warlord Dementus? That sounds intriguing.

According to early set photos, it looks almost like the Rock Riders are making a return in this latest film, but we don’t know if that “biker horde” mentioned here is that same group or not.

Rumor has it that Chris Hemsworth’s character will be that aforementioned Warlord Dementus, which will be interesting because I can’t imagine Chris Hemsworth would wear a full helmet or mask through the whole movie. Also, it’s important to note that there was a Dr. Dementus in the Mad Max video game, so I imagine this might be the same guy. Maybe he was a warlord before he got his PhD.

Mad Max: Furiosa will star Anya Taylor-Joy as a young Furiosa, along with Chris Hemsworth, Nathan Jones, and Tom Burke. The film is expected to release on May 24, 2024.
