A brand new trailer has dropped today for the highly anticipated post-apocalyptic thriller Y: The Last Man as we prepare for its premiere next month.

Y: The Last Man is the story of an apocalyptic event that wipes out every mammal with a Y chromosome from the planet, but one man (Yorick, played by Ben Schnetzer) and his pet monkey (Ampersand, played by a bunch of pixels) seem to have somehow escaped their fates… but how? Will Yorick be welcomed with open arms or hunted down and killed?

The trailer shows the progression of the cataclysmic event as all the men (including the president of the United States) collapse in a bloody mess. The surviving women band together to try to figure out what happened and how they can progress from here when the lone Yorick shows up. All the while, James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s World” plays in the background.

The new 10-episode TV series will be coming to FX on Hulu on September 13 after six years of production issues that ranged from main cast changes to showrunner shuffling. Of course, the COVID-19 pandemic didn’t help, either.

Y: The Last Man is based on a popular DC Comics series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra that ran for 60 issues from 2002 to 2008. During its run it received three Eisner Awards and was nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story for Volume 10 of the comic.

Also starring in this new series are Diane Lane as Jennifer Brown, Ashley Romans as Agent 355, and Amber Tamblyn as Kimberly Cunningham Campbell. FX states that all episodes of the season are directed by women and a significant number of production leads are also female, including “both DPs, the production designer, costume designer, casting director, editors, stunt coordinator and more.”
