The first official trailer for Bird Box Barcelona has dropped this week, showing off much more of the spin-off movie that fans of the original have been anticipating for five years.

What is Bird Box Barcelona About?

The trailer shows a much more urban depiction of the events that led to the suicide apocalypse in the original movie, including bodies falling from tall buildings and a clogged subway that would give any commuter nightmares.

Bird Box Barcelona stars Mario Casas as Sebastián in a spin-off that is almost entirely in Spanish. This is part of a larger plan to introduce several local-language spinoffs set in the same universe. The film is directed by Álex and David Pastor, and also stars Georgina Campbell, Naila Schuberth, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Diego Calva, Patrick Criado, Lola Dueñas, Gonzalo De Castro, and Michelle Jenner.

Spin-Off of the Original

The original Bird Box stars Sandra Bullock and John Malkovich in a blockbuster film that went on to win 5 awards and 9 nominations for everything from Oustanding Supporting Visual Effects to Best Actress for Sandra Bullock. The movie tells the story of a strange supernatural apocalypse where everyone was committing suicide unless they blindfolded themselves against the threat.

In this new trailer, we see a focus on the chaos of the big event as it happened in Spain’s second-most populated city. This film veers a bit more from the original source material (Josh Malerman’s 2014 novel of the same name), but fans don’t seem to mind. In a 2019 interview with Rolling Stone, Malerman remarked, “When I saw the movie version, I thought, ‘Now what happens to her? It was a funny feeling, like, ‘Wait, I want to know.’ We haven’t talked about a sequel in a real way, but I love the idea.”

But Wait, There’s More!

While Bird Box Barcelona is a reimagined spin-off, a true sequel to the original novel, called Malorie, was released in 2020 for those fans of the original who are looking to see a continuation of the story.

Bird Box Barcelona will release exclusively on Netflix on July 14.
