Some very lucky fans of The Handmaid’s Tale book were blessed with a surprise. Quite a few readers received THT’s sequel, The Testaments, a week early. They had no idea they were going to end up with such an unexpected blessing, and it’s left a lot of other readers just a little jealous. (Update: It appears that Amazon sent out about 800 copies early, by accident.)
#TheTestaments, the sequel to #TheHandmaidsTale book, was released early for some people. Share on XIf you can’t get your hands on The Testaments yet, don’t worry, you’re not doing anything wrong. The Testaments’ official release date is set for September 10. But some lucky readers who pre-ordered the book on Amazon Prime got it early. Want to test your lucky? Try pre-ordering at this link if you haven’t ordered the book already. Maybe you’ll be one of the lucky ones who get it early too.
Here’s proof, shared by one reader, of getting the book early.
The thing is, no one is sure why it was released early. There are no official statements out about the early release, so it’s unclear if it was on purpose or just a mistake. We’ll update this story if we find out.
According to a Reddit thread here, most of the people who got the book early had pre-ordered the book and had Amazon Prime. Others are saying that they’re checking their orders on Amazon and seeing that it says their books have already shipped and should be arriving soon.
Official reviews for the book are also out today, so it’s possible that the early release was intentionally timed to coincide with the official reviews.
Other people on the Reddit thread shared their good news too. One person wrote, “I got mine, too!! I’m so excited to get home from work!” Another said, “I got mine early, too! I’m glad I’m not the only one. I had plenty of time to read it yesterday and now I’m anxiously waiting for the discussions to start.”

Not everyone’s happy about the early release, and some think it hurt indie booksellers.
@MargaretAtwood Today I received from Amazon a copy of The Testaments. While I can’t wait to read it, I’m discouraged that Amazon would fail to abide by publisher release date, to the detriment of our beloved indie booksellers.

The Testaments is the sequel to the extremely popular novel by Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale. The book takes place 15 years after The Handmaid’s Tale ended. The Handmaid’s Tale was published in 1985.
You can pre-order The Testaments on Amazon at this link if you haven’t ordered the book already.
