The Walking Dead universe is expanding with the much-anticipated spin-off Daryl Dixon. The trailer dropped almost two weeks ago already, and there are many speculations online that the new show’s plot is going to be similar to The Last of Us.
How is The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Similar to The Last Of Us?
The new trailer shows Daryl who is now in France, arriving on one of its beaches on the hull of a small boat. Stranded, apparently. He explains that he is from the commonwealth, a place in America. A nun in the trailer asks him “How did you come to be in France?” to which he replies “A bunch of bad decisions…” She then explains that they have been waiting for him, and the scene changes to him shaking a young boy’s hand who introduces himself as Laurent.
And here are the similarities.
Daryl now becomes the guardian of this child, or as the nun puts it, the ‘Messenger’, and the internet is speculating that he might be one of the long-awaited immune humans that might change the history of the show as we know it. In The Last of Us, Ellie is immune to the infected’s disease, and Joel has to act as guardian and take her to the Fireflies. So, is Laurent also immune? And where is Daryl taking him?
In the trailer, the nun also tells Daryl that Laurent is ready to lead the revival of humanity, which supports the plausible immunity plot.
What is TWD: Daryl Dixon About?
In this new TWD Universe spin-off, Daryl finds himself stranded on the shores of France, the place where the virus apparently originated. Now, he faces the daunting task of unraveling the mystery behind his presence there and the reasons that led him to this point. Throughout the series, we will follow Daryl’s compelling journey across a fractured yet resilient France, as he desperately seeks a path back to his home. However, his quest becomes increasingly intricate as he forges unexpected bonds with others during his travels, adding complexity to his initial plan.
Norman Reedus reprises his role as Daryl Dixon from the original television series, alongside Clémence Poésy and Adam Nagaitis playing new characters. Development of the series began in September 2020. It was originally set to feature the character of Carol Peletier, but she was written off due to logistical issues involving the actress Melissa McBride, so the focus of the series shifted to Daryl. However, it was reported in June 2023 that McBride will appear in the show as her character in some capacity. The title of the series was announced in October 2022. Filming began in Paris that month, with additional casting taking place starting in November.
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is set to debut on September 10, 2023, with a total of six episodes in its first season. Exciting news arrived in July 2023 as the show was officially confirmed for a second season renewal.
