If you’re a fan of the Atomic Age and your fantasy apocalypse involves a big boom, you may want to check out a movie coming to theaters this Friday about the father of the atomic bomb.
Oppenheimer Hits Theaters This Friday
Oppenheimer is a biopic about J. Robert Oppenheimer, the man who led most of the atomic testing during World War II, including directing the Los Alamos Laboratory and heading up the Manhattan Project.
The film stars Cillian Murphy (Peaky Blinders, 28 Days Later) as J. Robert Oppenheimer and Emily Blunt (A Quiet Place, Edge of Tomorrow) as his wife, Kitty Oppenheimer. It tells the story of Oppenheimer’s life from his own perspective through his research that eventually led to a nuclear arms race between the United States and Nazi Germany. As you can imagine, there were many moral repercussions for his research (that was also shared by Albert Einstein), and the film is said to explore much of that aspect of his life.
Oppenheimer is written and directed by Christopher Nolan, and based on the 2005 biography entitled American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin.
The movie was already nominated for the Most Anticipated Film of 2023 by the Hollywood Critics Association during their Midseason Awards event, and the early reviews show promise for Oppenheimer taking home many more awards next year.

The Los Angeles Times’s Kenneth Turan calls Oppenheimer “arguably Nolan’s most impressive work yet in the way it combines his acknowledged visual mastery with one of the deepest character dives in recent American cinema.”
Matt Maytum of Total Film calls the movie “an epic historical drama but with a distinctly Nolan sensibility: the tension, structure, sense of scale, startling sound design, remarkable visuals.”
Oppenheimer also stars Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., and Scott Grimes in what legendary screenwriter Paul Schrader is calling “the best, most important film of the century.”
Oppenheimer arrives in theaters this Friday, July 21.
