As the main The Walking Dead series will wrap up with its finale on November 20, AMC and creator Scott M. Gimple are hoping that the smorgasbord of spin-offs will satiate TWD fans for years to come.
One of the most ambitious spin-offs in the TWD world is that of Daryl Dixon, the rebellious crossbow-wielding heart throb who will be going solo in France to fight the undead there.
Until recently, not much was known about this spin-off. How did Daryl get to France? How will they explain the absence of Carol, who was originally planned to be a major part of this spin-off until actress Melissa McBride rejected the role?
How Did Daryl get to France?
First off, AMC president Dan McDermott already spilled the beans on Daryl’s arrival in France.
“…He wakes up and finds himself somewhere on the European continent and tries to piece together what happened. How did he get here? How’s he going to get home?”
In other words, we won’t find out right away.
We also know that Daryl’s arrival in France is connected to the mid-credits scene in The Walking Dead: World Beyond when a scientist in a French lab was shot after watching videos from Dr. Erwin Jenner, whom you might remember way back in Season 1 of the original series. The topic of the videos revolved around walker variants that are said to be featured in this new Daryl Dixon series.

Thanks to a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, we get a few answers to other burning questions about the new Daryl spinoff series.
“We knew we wanted to make a show that went in the opposite direction,” Reedus teased, “just because we didn’t want to do the same thing. So that’s what we’re doing. And it’s going to be way different. The story’s way different. The characters are way different. There’s a different tone, there’s different light, there’s a different sound. It’s a whole different vibe.”

Many fans of the show who don’t want to see it completely change were curious about how TWD would look in France.
“I’ve been going on location scouts here and stuff, but it’s even more than just location,” Reedus reassures. “It’s all the things we love about those characters and those shows, but it’s going to be brand new, which I’m excited about.”
So what exactly does he mean? Can Norman sum the entire aesthetic up in the most Daryl way possible?
“This is going to be fucking epic,” he concluded in the interview.
The Daryl spin-off has already begun production in France and is expected to begin airing sometime in 2023.
It’s one of many spinoffs that we’re anticipating. Tales of the Walking Dead has just finished airing on AMC+, with the AMC finale airing soon. (See our review of the finale here.) We also have the Maggie and Negan spinoff, which has been busy filming. And most recently, fans were excited to learn that Rick and Michonne are getting their own spinoff.
