Rick and Michonne are back. After years of waiting on news about Rick’s series of movies for The Walking Dead, fans finally learned at Comic-Con that plans have changed. Instead of movies, we’ll be getting a spinoff starring Andrew Lincoln as Rick and Danai Guirira as Michonne.
This groundbreaking news came as a complete surprise during The Walking Dead panel at AMC’s Comic-Con event. See all the details below, including the video of the moment that Lincoln and Gurira announced the fantastic news.

Lincoln began by saying, “This is kind of overwhelming,” as the audience cheered for him. “Because you are the hardest of the hard-core fans, we have something we want to tell you.”
Gurira continued: “We…got together and have been cooking something up… We owe you the conclusion of this story!”
Lincoln continued: “So next year, there’s gonna be six episodes on AMC+ airing in 2023. So this time next year, there’s gonna be a whole lot more to talk about.”
Hardwick added: “This is in place of the movie that you’ve been talking about?” And Gimple confirmed that yes, it is. The two-hour movie has been replaced with six hours of TV.
Lincoln added, “I personally can’t wait to get my cowboy boots back on.”
Here’s the Synopsis & Visual Teaser
AMC’s synopsis reads: “This series presents an epic love story of two characters changed by a changed world. Kept apart by distance. By an unstoppable power. By the ghosts of who they were. Rick and Michonne are thrown into another world, built on a war against the dead… And ultimately, a war against the living. Can they find each other and who they were in a place and situation unlike any they’ve ever known before? Are they enemies? Lovers? Victims? Victors? Without each other, are they even alive — or will they find that they, too, are the Walking Dead?”
AMC also tweeted an epic visual teaser for the new series:

The picture shows Michonne’s sword through a note that reads “The new world’s gone. Need Rick Grimes.” In the background, you can see zombies walking.
An official name of the series has not yet been released, and a trailer has also not yet been released.

While some recent Walking Dead spinoffs have been limited-run series, like Tales of the Walking Dead’s planned one season, it looks like there’s a chance the Rick and Michonne series will be longer.
AMC’s press statement noted that the series “will begin with six episodes in 2023.” Many fans believe this implies the series could be multiple seasons long.
Scott Gimple will be a showrunner, while Lincoln and Gurira are “actively involved in conceiving the creative and the continuation of their characters’ story,” AMC’s press release noted.
Gimple said: “Rick and Michonne are two of my favorite people and Danai and Andy are two of my favorite people. Working with all of them continues to be a dream come true. The three of us, along with a terrific team of TWD all stars and incredible new voices, are crafting an insane love epic worth the long, long wait.”
Lincoln said: “I’m so excited to be returning to the screen as Rick, reuniting with Danai as Michonne, and bringing the fans an epic love story to add to the Walking Dead Universe.”
Gurira said: “Bringing The Walking Dead fans something truly special is just glorious. I can’t wait to pick up the katana again.”
