The post-apocalyptic cat adventure game Stray has swept the gaming world with its captivating gameplay and impressive visuals, but let’s be honest… it’s really an amazing cat simulator. So amazing, in fact, that cat owners everywhere are discovering that their feline friends actually enjoy watching that little cat run around on the screen. And there are some amazing videos out there of cats watching Stray.

This phenomenon started spreading around social media on Tuesday when the game launched and has blown up in only a few short days. One enterprising Twitter user even created an entire account (@CatsWatchStray) devoted entirely to cats watching their owners playing Stray. It’s magical.

The Cats Watching Stray Phenomenon Hit Reddit Too

The “cats watching Stray” trend has taken over Reddit too, of course. In fact, one person on the Playstation subreddit started a thread that simply says: “This subreddit has just become pictures/videos of cats watching the TV while someone plays Stray…”

What Is Stray About?

So what is Stray about? Imagine that you’re a cat living in a post-apocalyptic world run by advanced robots. Would you solve puzzles and help your robot masters with their various mysteries? Well, sure, there’s that, but you’d also just walk on keyboards, scratch up the furniture, and knock clay pots off of 3-story buildings, right?

Stray has all of that, which makes it one of the best and most genuine cat simulators I’ve ever played. You can watch me play the game on our Twitch and YouTube channels where I coined the phrase “purrkour.” Don’t let me forget to copyright that.


Stray remained one of Steam’s most-anticipated games for months before its release and has not disappointed. There’s even a cross promotion going on right now with an apparel company that makes themed cat backpacks and harnesses for your Stray-loving cats.

Developed by French studio BlueTwelve Studio and published by Annapurna Interactive, Stray is currently out now for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC through Steam.
