Here’s the First Trailer for The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5
Hulu released the trailer, and you can watch it below or at this link.
The trailer begins with June saying, “I wanted her to know that it was me. The grieving wife.”
We see scenes of a funeral and Serena pretending to mourn her husband. It looks like the Commander’s death may only serve to further propel Serena into gaining even more power while she is in Canada.
“She knows the world is watching,” June says in the voiceover. She then continues, saying: “I feel Gilead pulling me back.”
That line is disturbing, since the last thing I want to see is June returning to Gilead and being controlled again.
The trailer has quite a few quick shots of Nick, but it appears that June is spending most of her time with Luke this season. (Or at least, based on the scenes we’ve been shown so far.)
Next, Luke tells June: “She can’t get to you. So you’ve just got to forget about her.”
He’s always been naively optimistic about Serena’s power. But this trailer indicates her control and reach are growing.
We also see a couple of quick glimpses of Aunt Lydia in the trailer, acting as boisterous as ever, saying, “Blessed be this day!”
We hear a voiceover saying, “A Handmaid killing her commander… Gilead is not gonna let that stand.”
There are quick images of June running, Luke fighting with the police, and either June or Luke (likely Luke) behind bars.
We also see June looking up at an upside-down American flag, which is perhaps one of the most poignant scenes in the trailer. We get a brief look at Janine, and then a series of clips that appear to look like June may try to shoot and kill Serena.
June can be seen pulling out a gun, perhaps to shoot her? And her voiceover says, “You wanna fight? Let’s fight.”
Hulu Also Released a Season 5 Synopsis
Hulu also released an official synopsis for Season 5.
The synopsis reads: “In Season 5, June faces consequences for killing Commander Waterford while struggling to redefine her identity and purpose. The widowed Serena attempts to raise her profile in Toronto as Gilead’s influence creeps into Canada. Commander Lawrence works with Aunt Lydia as he tries to reform Gilead and rise in power. June, Luke, and Moira fight Gilead from a distance as they continue their mission to save and reunite with Hannah.”
Moira isn’t seen in the trailer, but she apparently plays a large role this season anyway.
Fans already have a lot to say about the new season. Here are some comments on Reddit.
One fan wants to know why Janine and Esther are collapsed on the floor in one scene.
Another fan thinks that Serena is going to make a big accusation about June on TV, and she’s going to reclaim the televangelist type of role that she had before the creation of Gilead.
Another fan is simply excited to see Serena and June faceoff.
