The Walking Dead’s original spin-off, Fear the Walking Dead, has spawned its own spin-off that will premiere next month.

Dead in the Water is set aboard a submarine (the USS Pennsylvania) on the eve of the zombie apocalypse that sets off the events for all other TWD shows. It will star Nick Stahl as Riley, a character that first appeared in five episodes of last year’s season of Fear the Walking Dead.

You might remember Riley as the submarine weapons officer who helped turn Texas into a nuclear apocalypse. Dead in the Water is said to start off right before Season 6 of Fear the Walking Dead as sailors aboard the ship begin to turn one-by-one.

“We are working on telling the backstory of the USS Pennsylvania,” co-showrunner Ian Goldberg said last year during an interview with Twitch’s TWDUniverse. “I can’t say much other than we’re figuring it out right now. We have a story, we have a script, and we’re just putting the pieces in place. It’s something that we very much hope to make happen and soon because there’s a really cool story of how that crew that we met in Episode 615 met that fate, and a few other pieces of the mythology. I won’t say too much beyond that, but I think it’ll be really cool.”

Goldberg will be showrunning Dead in the Water with Andrew Chambliss and TWD Universe chief content officer Scott Gimble.

As an interesting aside, a new trailer was released last week that showed Madison Clark (Kim Dickens) making her return to Fear the Walking Dead. So now we can’t help but wonder if there’s any connection between Madison’s return and the release date announcement for Dead in the Water. Will we see Madison in this new spin-off?

Luckily, AMC+ subscribers only have to wait until April 10 to find out.
