Two post-apocalyptic anime series — Attack on Titan and 86 (sometimes written as Eighty Six) — have been nominated for “Anime of the Year” in Crunchyroll’s Anime Awards. Both series also received quite a few additional nominations in Crunchyroll’s Awards. The Evangelion movie also received a nomination too, meaning three post-apocalyptic series picked up nominations from Crunchyroll this year. Voting is still taking place through January 25 at this link and you can vote very day.
This article is anime-focused only and contains no manga or light novel spoilers.
Attack on Titan Has 10 Nominations
Both 86 and Attack on Titan Final Season Part 1 were nominated for Anime of the Year, alongside four other series: Jujutsu Kaisen (cour 2), ODDTAXI, Ranking of Kings, and Sonny Boy.
The character of Eren Jaeger in the Final Season Part 1 is also nominated for Best Protagonist and Best Antagonist. This actually made me laugh out loud when I saw that his character was nominated for both, even though it makes perfect sense.
Of course, Attack on Titan also picked up a Best Fight Scene nomination for the Eren Jaeger vs. War Hammer Titan fight in the beginning of Season 4. That fight was epic and won’t be soon forgotten.
Yuichiro Hayashi picked up a nomination for Best Director for Season 4 Part 1.
Attack on Titan also picked up two nominations for Best VA Performance (Japanese): one for Ayane Sakura’s work as Gabi Braun and one for Yuki Kaji’s work as Eren Jaeger. The show didn’t pick up any nominations for English VA performance.
The series also picked up a nomination for Best Opening Sequence for Boku no sensou by Shinsei Kamattechan (aka My War) and really, can you blame them? It should win this one hands down. The series also picked up a nomination for Best Ending Sequence for Shogeki by Yuko Ando (the ending sequence for Season 4 Part 1.)
MAPPA picks up a nomination for Best Action in Season 4 Part 1 (which is well-deserved.)
86 Has Four Nominations
Along with being nominated for Anime of the Year, 86 also picked up a nomination for Best Girl (Vladilena Milize.) If you’ve watched the series, you’ll have no doubt why she picked up that nomination. Her character is phenomenal.
Hiroyuki Sawano and Kohta Yamamoto picked up a nomination for Best Score for their work on 86. The soundtrack for 86 is phenomenal. Although I think Attack on Titan should have gotten a nomination too, I can’t help but have the music for 86 sometimes running through my mind randomly.
I think VA actor who voices Frederica in English (Kimberley Anne Campbell) and the Japanese actor (Misaki Kuno) should have picked up a nomination for Best VA Actor. Frederica sometimes brought me to tears, especially later in the series when she was so worried about Shinei.
86 also picked up a nomination for Best Drama (Studio: A-1 Pictures) which it definitely deserves. This is a dark series that sometimes brings tears to my eyes.
Evangelion Picked Up a Nomination for Best Film
The post-apocalyptic movie, Evangelion 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, also picked up a nomination for Best Film.
The only series I report on here that did not get a nomination was Muv-Luv Alternative, which is a shame.
If you’re an Attack on Titan fan who is reading this article, I can’t stress enough that you should check out 86. While nothing will be as good as Attack on Titan, the 86 anime is truly thought-provoking and dark, and you’ll definitely find yourself pulled in quickly.
