The end-of-the-year holiday season is usually one of the biggest times for Netflix, so that makes the wild success of Don’t Look Up even more meaningful as it takes the top spot since its release on December 24.

Don’t Look Up is a dark comedic thriller featuring an all-star cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Tyler Perry, Ron Perlman, and many more.

The movie has been praised for its home-team political slant, biting humor, and climate-centered message, and the acting ain’t too shabby either. You can check out our own review of the movie here.

During the prime holiday break, Netflix reports that Don’t Look Up raked in 263 million viewer hours from December 24 to January 2. If you’re wondering how that ranks with the streaming giant’s most-watched shows of all time, that gives it a solid third place right behind 2019’s apocalyptic blockbuster Bird Box and the Gal Gadot spy thriller Red Notice.

Netflix has only recently become more open about their viewer numbers, led in part by its new website that tracks its most popular movies and TV shows across the world as well as an all-time ranking.

As CNet notes, Netflix has “notoriously tight-lipped about its viewership.” House of Cards creator Beau Willimon once remarked that the streaming company wouldn’t even share those numbers with him after he helped create the original programming side of the service.

But as these top-ranking titles continue to out-perform themselves, we can’t help but notice the love for all things post-apocalyptic. Let’s keep that up!

Shawn has been infatuated with the post-apocalyptic genre since he wore out his horribly American-dubbed VHS of the original Mad Max as a child. Shawn is the former Editor-in-Chief at Massively.com, creator of the Aftermath post-apocalyptic immersion event, and author of "AI For All," a guide to navigating this strange new world of artificial intelligence.
He currently resides on top of a mountain in the middle of nowhere with his wife and four children.
