We’re all fascinated by the post-apocalyptic genre for various reasons. Some of us like the idea of being the last person left on Earth alone, some of us like the idea of no more technology and stress, while some of us just want to shoot zombies in the head Rick Grimes style.
French photographer Romain Veillon’s interest lies more in the beauty of an abandoned planet without humans.
Veillon’s latest book, Green Urbex: The World Without Us, takes a deeper look at just how gorgeous civilization can be when taken back by nature.
“We are all fascinated by this post-apocalyptic vision,” he says in the book. “Maybe we need to be the witness of that to enjoy what we have and the time in front of us.”
The book is only available in French at this time, but its photos know no barriers. The book is divided up into three sections. The first spotlights well-preserved places, the second is more about sites beyond repair, while the third is all about forgotten spaces that have been completely taken over by vegetation.

In an interview with CNN, Veillon says that his fascination with deserted sites started at a young age when he discovered an abandoned truck factory near Paris. “The photographs were all shot during the last 10 years,” he told CNN. “It’s really a mix of all the places I have been documenting since I started.”
“Each story will be different from the other, and that’s what I love,” Veillon remarks.
