Scene-by-Scene Analysis
The trailer begins with Zeke saying: “Eren, I just want to end all of this.”
Of course, he’s referring to his ultimate plan that we learned about in the first half of the season. Zeke’s not seeking the restoration of Eldians’ independence from Marley like Grisha was. Instead, he’s following Tom Ksaver’s cause: the long-term euthanization of all Eldians as the only means of ending the Titan power. In other words, ending their ability to reproduce.
Through Ksaver’s research, he learned that the Founding Titan can alter the very nature of Eldian physiology and even did so 600 years ago to make them immune to a plague. He wants to connect with Eren’s Founding Titan so Eren can alter the Eldians’ physiology once again and make them sterile. He believes this is the only way to end the Titan curse and free of all mankind once and for all.
Next we see Reiner and Eren facing off for a fight while Zeke’s voice is overlaid, asking, “Why do you struggle? What are you fighting for? For what?”
“Because I was born in this world,” Eren answers, as we see a very strange drawing of Grisha.
He becomes smaller and smaller and disappears off screen, replaced with a mesh of color and light.
Then we see a gorgeous shot of Mikasa as a little girl.
Then we see Eren’s face again as it dissolves into color and light.
Next someone else says, “The Founding Titan and the Titan with royal blood, they are together.”
And we hear the words: “Don’t let Eren and Zeke get in touch.” (Of course, they want to avoid this because Eren and Zeke can enact the Rumbling if they touch.)
It looks like Marley is dropping in paratroopers that are turning into Titans (including Reiner), much like we’ve seen them do before.
Then we hear someone say, “I would say he plans to become a murderer for our sake.”
And we see Mikasa, Connie, Armin, and Jean, ready for battle. Mikasa is carrying thunderspears and she is NOT wearing the red scarf after what Eren said to her.
We see Floch as we hear the words: “We are in the moment where this will change history.”
And a very happy-looking Yelena watches the blimps arrive.
But she’s happy because it looks like some of them are crashing before they can unleash more damage.
A very concerned Onyankopon is trying to break the lock and free Mikasa and the others from their cells.
And someone asks, “What are you going to do Mikasa?”
In this next shot, we can see that she is still holding the red scarf that Eren gave her. So perhaps, because of Jean’s words from the last episode, she hasn’t lost all hope in him after all.
But she certainly looks conflicted and sad.
“Do you want to save Eren?” someone asks Mikasa.
Then we see Armin, looking very conflicted about something he’s about to do.
A close-shot of what appears to be Gabi’s eye.
And we hear the words: “They weren’t any devils on the island…
And we see… Something. A camera? A bomb?
And then a close shot of a Marleyan soldier’s eye.
And we see a SKELETON of a Titan holding up a weapon over the side of the Paradis wall. And that has got to be one of the most interesting parts of the entire trailer to me, but if you blinked you might have missed it. I think this is Pieck in skeleton form. Maybe Pieck can leave her skeleton behind kind of like we’ve seen Eren do in the past?
A voice says, “just humans” as we see Gabi an Falco running. We saw Falco “activated” by Zeke’s scream last episode, but he’s still OK at this point. Unless this is a flashback, which it very well might be.
Hange finds Levi. Some think he’s dead. I think he’s alive but barely hanging on.
And we see Annie again, still encased in her shell, and I have to wonder what role she will play, if any, in the last episodes of the series.
“We can only move forward in this way,” we hear.
And we see that scene again where Zeke tossed a baseball to Eren. And now I’ll refer back to my theory that Eren gained a lot of memories that were hidden from him when he touched the baseball that Zeke had already touched.
Next we see what appears to be a flashback of Eren running through the streets of Paradis. But it might also be a shot of Eren fleeing after someone from the Survey Corps defeats Reiner. You can see Reiner’s head gone. However, we all know that Reiner can transfer his consciousness to different parts of his body and avoid dying through the traditional means, so I’m sure Reiner is still alive.
We see Zeke reaching out to someone, presumably Eren while we hear: “Come, Eren!”
And WHAT is THIS weapon that Gabi has? Is this what I saw earlier and took a screenshot of, trying to identify?
The screen then turns black and we hear: “Are you the one who brought me here?” Paradis appears to have a river of blood. But the walls are still intact, so it does not appear that the Rumbling took place at this point.
And then we see what appears to be the Founding Titan Ymir. We’ve talked about her before. Zeke saw her in a dream when he thought he was going to die. And that trailer after Season 4 Part 1 ended featured her heavily, but the trailer was only ever aired in Japan and not the U.S. You can see the trailer in our story here. She was also featured in the teaser photo for the new season.
We get our first shot of Porco in the whole trailer. He’s got some pretty major wounds on him.
And then we see the Beast titan again! So I guess this means that Zeke heals enough to turn into a Titan again after his fight with Levi.
He’s hurling rocks at some of the blimps. And we hear: “I want to end this world!”
We see this random shot that probably has a lot of meaning. The slight hint of bubbles behind him on his left reminds me of the NHK trailer that released and wasn’t aired in the U.S.
We get more shots of Eren’s fight with Reiner and hear, “Give me strength!” And then: “You do not need to continue this suffering.”
And then we see a shot of Reiner spearing Eren, but of course we know that Eren’s not going to die in this fight.
“I am the one with royal blood!” we hear. And we see two men with blue eyes — one with blonde hair and one with brown — facing each other.
My theory, as an anime-only watcher, is that the scenes above are either connected to the creation of the Titans or to Fritz-and-Tybur’s truce. We still don’t know how exactly the Titans were created by Ymir about 2,000 years ago. And we also don’t know what went down between the Tybur who held the Warhammer power and King Fritz more than 100 years ago. Perhaps the scene above is from that moment? We know they concocted the Helos story and then King Fritz vowed to never fight again.
And then this moment… Is this when people are transformed by Zeke’s scream?
And then we hear Eren saying, “I can only keep moving forward,” while we see shots of who is likely the Founding Titan Ymir.
And Eren concludes: “Even if it is death after death.” Which of course begs the question: is Eren only following Titan programming himself?
We see a scene from a previous episode where he pointed to the sea, so now I know for certain that some of the scenes in this trailer are older scenes mixed with new.
Is Falco turning into a Titan here? 🙁
Then Eren says, “I’ve always been like this… since I was born.”
