The fourth installment of the wildly popular Matrix movie franchise is dropping this week and fans are excited to finally get their eyeballs on what promises to tie all previous films together.
The Matrix Resurrections had its official theatrical premiere in Toronto, Canada on December 16, but most of the world won’t see it until tomorrow, December 22.
The two-and-a-half-hour movie will release in theaters, but as a special treat, it will also release on the ad-free tier of HBO Max in the United States on that same day. While this is great news for HBO Max subscribers who don’t want to leave the comfort of their own homes, the movie will only be available for a month, just as we saw when Dune released in October.
But unfortunately, unlike Dune, Resurrections will not release early on the streaming platform. You can expect the movie to pop up on HBO Max at 3:01 a.m. ET on the morning of December 22, according to reports.
For theatrical release times, you’ll need to check your local theater listings for Wednesday, December 22.
What Can We Expect from this Movie?
The Matrix Resurrections is a movie that wasn’t even supposed to happen. When the first three movies wrapped up in 2003 (the last two came out within 6 months of each other!), writer/director team Lana and Lilly Wachowski (then Larry and Andy Wachowski) said that they wouldn’t make another movie. We were stuck with The Matrix Revolutions as that last taste in our mouths.
But in 2019, this fourth movie was announced. It will see Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Lambert Wilson, and Jada Pinkett Smith reprising their original roles with the introduction of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Christina Ricci in new or replacement roles. Lana Wachowski is returning as director without her sister, as well as taking lead on the writing role along with David Mitchell and Aleksandar Hemon.
Will The Matrix Resurrections be Available on Other Streaming Platforms?
The simple answer to this one is “no”… or at least “not yet.” Although it’s not unheard of to see these films drop onto Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Hulu or others in about 45 days after initial release, there are no confirmations from these services just yet.
The original trilogy is available right now on Hulu and HBO Max, so that may be helpful info when determining where the fourth movie will land in 2022.
And if, for some reason, you’re feeling guilty about watching the latest Matrix movie from your couch in your favorite PJs, Keanu Reeves has a word or two for you. The 57-year-old actor said in a recent interview with The Guardian that he is perfectly fine knowing that many people will probably stream it at home. “I mean, sure, stream it if you have to,” Reeves told The Guardian’s Tom Lamont after the journalist joked that he would be watching it at home on a laptop.
Thanks, Keanu. I’ll do just that.
