Fallout 5 is Merely a Gleam in Todd Howard’s Eye, But That’s a Start

Yesterday marked the 6th anniversary of Fallout 4’s launch and fans are getting close to that 7-year itch for another sequel, but is Fallout 5 even in the works?

According to Bethesda Studio Director Todd Howard, the plans for Fallout 5 are little more than a “one-pager” at this point. But what does that mean? Essentially, it will be many, many years before we’ll begin to see a whisper of any tangible Fallout 5 news. Booooo.

Speaking with IGN during the Skyrim 10th Anniversary episode of IGN Unfiltered, Howard noted that two other games take priority over Fallout 5 right now: Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6.

Starfield is the studio’s upcoming action RPG set in a futuristic space beyond our own solar system. Coincidentally, the game is set to launch exactly one year from today (they like November launches!). And once that’s set, Elder Scrolls 6 will be on the table. That game’s release could realistically be 5 years from now, so we’re guessing that Fallout 5 wouldn’t see the light of day for about another 10 years. That’s a long time, folks.

But as Howard notes, Fallout is a big part of the studio’s pedigree, so they’re not just abandoning it. “…If I could wave my hand and have [Fallout 5] out – you know, I’d like to find a way to accelerate what we do, but I can’t really say today or commit to anything, [like] what’s going to happen when,” he noted.

And the studio head also comments on the idea of passing development off to another studio. “We’ve worked with other people from time to time. I can’t say say what’s gonna happen.”

So what would you like to see in the next proper installment of the Fallout series? Rumors have involved everything from New Orleans to Europe for the next location, but beyond those rumors, we really have nothing. We’ll just have to keep helping Preston Garvey with those settlements and hoping for the best.
