Fans of Y: The Last Man received disappointing news this morning when showrunner Eliza Clark announced on Twitter that the show would not receive a second season on FX on Hulu.

Comic co-creator Pia Guerra’s tweet summed up the mood of many after receiving the news.

Fan reaction was also swift, with many beginning calls for another network to pick up the show.

Ms. Clark did offer a ray of hope that the show would be able to find a new home.

“FX has been an amazing partner. We have loved working with them, and we’re sad YTLM is not going forward at FX on Hulu. But we know that someone else is going to be very lucky to have this team and this story. I have never experienced the remarkable solidarity of this many talented people. We are committed to finding Y its next home.”

Fans of post-apocalyptic TV might remember that Jericho faced a similar situation back in 2008 when it was cancelled by CBS after its first season. The fanbase came together and mailed 40,000 pounds of peanuts to CBS headquarters to show their support. The “unprecedented display of passion in support of a prime time television series” convinced CBS to order seven more episodes.

In more recent history, there are several examples of another network picking up a previously cancelled show. Netflix gave a third and final season to Designated Survivor in 2018, and has produced several seasons of Lucifer. Amazon Prime famously took over production of The Expanse for several seasons after it was cancelled by Syfy.

Then just this year, Netflix announced that they will be producing a fourth season of Manifest after being swayed by strong streaming numbers and a vociferous #SaveManifest campaign.

There are still three episodes of Y: The Last Man left to air on FX on Hulu, and there will be those who will question whether it makes sense to bother watching them. As a fan of the show in particular, and of post-apocalyptic TV in general, I would encourage you to not only watch them, but to spread the word to your friends as well.

The best way to show another network that Y is worth picking up is to try to bump viewership numbers as much as we can.

There is also already a Change.org petition started by the Y: The Last Man Discord group.

We will, of course, continue our weekly recap and review posts after each of the final three episodes, here on Post-Apocalyptic.com.
