Turbo Kid, the film, was released in 2015 and quickly garnered a rabid worldwide following, cementing its place as a legitimate cult classic.
Turbo Kid is a post-apocalyptic, BMX-powered, blood-splattered love story that follows the epic journey of an orphaned outcast reluctant to be a hero in the wasteland of an alternate future.
Fans are still waiting for Turbo Kid 2, but they’ll soon have a chance to catch up on what The Kid is up to with the launch of the Kickstarter campaign for Turbo Kid the Game.
The game is a post-apocalyptic metroidvania by developer Outerminds in collaboration with the creators of the film RKSS Films, band Le Matos and producer EMA Films.
The game takes place in the distant future of 1997, where The Kid must fend for himself as he crosses the wasteland in search of a friend. Fans of the movie have high hopes about who that friend might be.
In keeping with the movie, the game will feature sprawling and diverse environments, comically over the top gore, a heartwarming story, and cool BMX tricks, all wrapped up in a throwback package. Check out the teaser below for a closer look.
If that looks like a game you’d like to try, head on over to Kickstarter to give them your support. Pledges start at about $25 for a digital version of the game for Switch or PC, but there are several other tiers that add loads of cool swag.
In the first few hours of the campaign, they’re already over $20,000 raised, or 50% to their goal.
They say the game will come out sometime in 2022 no matter what, but they’ve devised some cool features while working on the game that are a bit ambitious for their budget. So they’re looking for some “finishing funds” that will hopefully allow them to add these extra features and make an already rad game, even more rad.
And if you’ve never seen Turbo Kid, here’s a quick introduction in the form of a prequel short film / music video that highlights the style and humor of the film, and the amazing soundtrack.
