Back in February of this year, Sony confirmed that a comedy adaptation of the Twisted Metal video game was being created with only rumors swirling about the cast. But now we have official word that Falcon and the Winter Soldier star Anthony Mackie will not only play the lead role of John Doe in the TV series, but will also executive produce.

John Doe is a memory-less milkman who is trying to deliver a mysterious package in the wasteland while crazed marauders do their best to stop him along the way. With the game’s heavy focus on decked-out vehicular combat, we can only assume that this will also be a large part of the series.

“We’ve been big fans of Anthony’s phenomenal body of work over the years and knew he was the only actor who could play a character as complex, funny and compelling as John Doe,” said Glenn Adilman, executive vp comedy development at Sony Pictures TV. “Fortunately for us, he agreed.”

PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash also agrees. ““We’re thrilled to have Anthony Mackie on board. His ability to blend comedy, action and drama is perfect for the Twisted world we’re creating.”

The series was brainstormed by Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who will also executive produce with Mackie and Cobra Kai’s Michael Jonathan Smith.

In addition to Mackie’s starring role, Will Arnett (Arrested Development) is said to join the cast as the voice of Sweet Tooth.

Twisted Metal started life in 1995 as a “demolition derby on steroids” with some of the craziest weapons you’ve ever seen mounted to vehicles. The game quickly gained popularity for its brutal sense of humor and saw sequels in the series continue until 2015.
