You Can Stream the Movie on Amazon Prime via Free Trial
Your best bet for watching the movie is streaming it on Amazon Prime. In fact, Amazon announced in a press release that it has exclusive rights to stream the movie (excluding Japan, where others may have streaming rights too.) Amazon Prime is also releasing all three previous movies in the franchise for exclusive streaming on Prime Video too. However, those movies may also be available elsewhere for rental or purchase.
You can stream “Evangelion:3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon a Time” at this link.
If you don’t already have Amazon Prime, then you can sign up for a 30-day free trial here. This will give you enough time to watch all of the Evangelion movies, including the new one. (Note: If you’re really wanting to sign up for full Amazon Prime and are part of a government assistance program, you might qualify for a special $5.99/month price here. In the U.S., Prime typically costs $12.99 a month.)
The movie will be available on Amazon Prime in the United States no later than 12 a.m. Pacific on August 13, although it might be released earlier than that. Because Amazon Prime has exclusive streaming rights, you won’t find this anime movie on sites like Crunchyroll or Funimation.
Once you have Amazon Prime, you can watch the movie on your computer, smart TV, iOS or Android phone or tablet, game console like Xbox or PlayStation, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, and other sources.
The synopsis for the new movie reads: “The fourth and final installment of the Rebuild of Evangelion. Misato and her anti-Nerv group Wille arrive in Paris, a city now red from core-ization. Crew from the flagship Wunder land on a containment tower. They only have 720 seconds to restore the city. When a horde of Nerv Evas appear, Mari’s improved Eva Unit 8 must intercept. Meanwhile, Shinji, Asuka, and Rei (provisional name) wander around Japan.”
The New Movie Is Releasing in 11 Languages
Amazon Prime’s version is releasing in 240 countries, and the version in the U.S. will include English subtitles or an English dub. In total, it’s releasing in 11 dubbed languages, Anime News Network shared: Japanese, French, German, English, Italian, Brazilian, Portuguese, Spanish (Peninsular and Latin American), Hindi, Chinese, and Korean.
The movie may also available in other forms online, since it already released in Japan on March 8, breaking records and become the highest-grossing franchise in Japan, Crunchyroll shared. This was after its release was delayed twice because of the pandemic.
Amazon Prime is also releasing three other movies: Evangelion: 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone, Evangelion: 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance, and Evangelion: 3:33 You Can (Not) Redo.
The franchise originally aired in 1995 as Neon Genesis Evangelion. In 1997, the movie Evangelion: Death & Rebirth was released which had an hour of clips from the first 24 epiosodes, along with a new ending. Then the movie The End of Evangelion premiered in 1997 with a brand new ending that retold the last two episodes of the series, winning awards. In 2006, four new movies under the umbrella “Rebuild of Evangelion” were announced. The first movie in that series is a retelling of six episodes from Neon Genesis. Then the last three movies are the ones Amazon Prime is also releasing, which are listed above.
