It’s been almost two months since Sweet Tooth first premiered and on July 20, Netflix revealed that the series has been watched by 60 million households since its June 4 release, making it take 6th place in the top-10 most-watched English-language originals list.
This comes as no surprise for fans of the show and critics all over the internet, with rankings of 7.9/10 on IMDB and 98% on Rotten Tomatoes’s Tomatometer. Sweet Tooth offers a beautiful story with engaging characters set in a post-apocalyptic setting where hybrid children are mysteriously born with animal-like features while humans are being killed by a virus pandemic. And while the TV series offers incredibly gorgeous scenes complete with mountains, forests, lakes and rivers, one can come to wonder – where was Sweet Tooth filmed?

A lot of productions, like Day of the Dead, for example, are filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada since the area is very diverse in scenery, from mountains and snow to sandy ocean beaches and is on the cheaper side of production costs, so I was surprised to see that this Netflix production was actually filmed in New Zealand, especially since the main actor who plays protagonist ‘Gus’, Christian Convery, is from Vancouver. The crew travelled from Queenstown, Otago to Auckland in New Zealand to find the best filming locations and it definitely paid off. Let’s take a look at some of the filming locations.
Not only does the show provide beautiful places to check out in the series, but the behind-the-scenes crew fun was very evident in the many Instagram posts already online.
As gorgeous as the scenes are, young actor Christian Convery is no stranger to the outdoors and beautiful scenery. He and his family often travel in search of the next outdoorsy adventure and his Instagram account, closely monitored by his parents, proves this fact with multiple pictures of family fun.
Sweet Tooth was originally set to be streamed on Hulu, but on April 9, 2020, it was announced that the series had been moved from Hulu to Netflix. In July 2020, New Zealand granted permission to film the series, despite travel restrictions due to the Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on television, and on October 1, 2020, the series had resumed filming until mid-December 2020. This all slowed the production but never impacted the quality of the series as we can now witness, almost two months after its release.

Season 2 of Sweet Tooth has not been announced yet, but online speculations are in favor of October 2022. Let’s hope it won’t take that long to view more of beautiful New Zealand through the show!
