Zack Snyder confirmed this week that his production company has signed a two-year contract with Netflix to create more of the epic blockbusters we’ve come to know from him, including Army of the Dead. But most interestingly, this means a sequel to the zombie heist movie is in the works.

Snyder’s The Stone Quarry Productions, a company he runs with his wife, Deborah Snyder, and executive producer Wesley Coller, hopes to replicate the success that films like Army of the Dead have provided for Netflix. Army of the Dead spent several weeks as Netflix’s top-watched movie this summer with 75 million accounts worldwide tuning in during the first four weeks alone.

“Netflix has given us a lot of freedom,” Deborah Snyder remarked to The Hollywood Reporter. “But they’ve also embraced the idea of trying new things and not necessarily waiting for a success before moving ahead.”

One of those new things is a confirmed sequel for Army of the Dead. Snyder revealed that he would be working on the next in the series with co-writer Shay Hatten after he’s finished with his upcoming sci-fi, Rebel Moon. With Rebel Moon’s projected production beginning in 2022, we don’t see the new Army of the Dead sequel coming out for four or five more years, unfortunately.

But we don’t have to wait that long for more films in the Army of the Dead universe. This fall will see the German-made prequel Army of Thieves and an anime spinoff should be hitting in spring of 2022.

Of course, Army of the Dead’s ending was a perfect set-up for a sequel, so it’s not hard to imagine that Snyder had this planned all along. Snyder teased in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that he knows “exactly where the story goes” from this point.

Netflix film head Scott Stuber has been with Snyder since his early days with Dawn of the Dead and he sees no end in sight for Snyder’s dominance. ““I’ve known Zack and Deb for years and was fortunate to be part of Dawn of the Dead, his first film,” Stuber said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “I have since had the privilege of watching his career grow and see the evolving impact of his work. To see him return to his roots with Army of the Dead, which is now one of our most popular films, and build a world out of these characters with the upcoming Army of Thieves and anime series, is amazing to see.

“We’ve only scratched the surface of what’s still to come and create with Zack, Deb, Wes and everyone at Stone Quarry.”
