Even before A Quiet Place II enjoyed its theatrical success late last month, Paramount Pictures announced that a third film was already in the works for the franchise.

The first installment of A Quiet Place released in 2018 to critical acclaim, still enjoying a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film tells the story of a family surviving in a world decimated by blind creatures with hypersensitive hearing. It’s directed, co-written, and stars The Office‘s John Krasinski along with his wife, Emily Blunt.

The sequel, which just released in theaters last month, set records for pandemic-era ticket sales, racking up $58M in its opening weekend.

So with that success in mind, fans now have their eyes set on what Krasinski will do with this fabled third film. So far, we know that this next movie has been called everything from a spin-off to a spiritual successor, but it is certainly not another sequel.

The next installment will be written and directed by Jeff Nichols instead of Krasinski, although in a recent interview with Emily Blunt, she states that Krasinski spawned the idea for this third movie.

“He has a whole arc of ideas that could work,” Blunt said in a May interview with Collider. “I think he just wanted to see how people responded to this one before he fully engaged his brain on the third one. But he has a couple of great ideas.”

Jeff Nichols is certainly a worthy successor for those writing and directing duties. His resume includes everything from Matthew McConaughey’s Mud to the apocalyptic thriller Take Shelter.

At this point, Paramount is still being tight-lipped with further details, but they do have a release date already slotted: March 31, 2023.
