With the continued popularity of the The Last of Us franchise, Sony is reportedly now working on a remake of the original 2013 game for the PlayStation 5.
The hit post-apocalyptic game enjoyed an award-winning sequel in 2020 while fans are currently looking forward to the TV show that is expected to hit HBO later this year.
But why would that original game need a remake? If this rumor is to be believed, there are several possibilities for why Sony would be doing this now. Previous rumors pegged the game’s development switching around quite a bit, from a team of 30 under director Michael Mumbauer to a return to the original developer, Naughty Dog.
But one report states that Sony may simply be creating this remake for the sole purpose of bundling it with the PS5 version of the sequel when it arrives.
I’m sure the timing of the TV show also doesn’t hurt as the cast list continues to grow. The Mandalorian‘s Pedro Pascal and Game of Thrones‘ Bella Ramsey are both set to star in the HBO series with Chernobyl’s Craig Mazin and game director Neil Druckmann as creators.
Meanwhile, The Last of Us Part II took home seven wins and 11 nominations in the Game Awards 2020 to sit nicely beside the game’s crop of perfect review scores at launch.
