On Tuesday, NBC announced three new shows that it had picked up for the 2021-2022 season, including one that especially caught our eye.

La Brea is the story of a family broken apart by a massive sinkhole that opens up right in the middle of Los Angeles. The catastrophic event separates “mother and son from father and daughter,” according to a press release.

The release goes on to further describe the interesting premise of possible time or dimensional travel. “When part of the family find themselves in an unexplainable primeval world, alongside a disparate group of strangers, they must work to survive and uncover the mystery of where they are and if there is a way back home.”

While the plot’s post-apocalyptic cred might be slightly questionable, we feel that it’s at least apocalyptic. Plus, it’s not too far from the reality of what could be a reality for downtown Los Angeles, as seen in the video below.

The shows stars Natalie Zea, who is perhaps most well-known for her role as Winona Hawkins in Justified, but she also played major roles in The Following, Under the Dome, Californication, and The Shield. Other cast members listed on the show’s IMDB page include Chicago Fire/P.D./Justice‘s Jon Seda and True Blood‘s Michael Raymond-James.

The other two shows picked up by the network are both comedies, but NBC’s Lisa Katz, President of Scripted Content, describes them as having some commonality. “While these shows are very different thematically, what they have in common is a unique voice, excellent world building, and compelling storytelling. We can’t wait to share them with TV fans everywhere.”

Katz also stressed that more casting details for La Brea will be coming soon.
