The annual Epic Games Store sale is underway, and while it’s always great to get a daily free game, today’s offering of Metro 2033 Redux is a requirement for post-apocalyptic game fans.
Metro 2033 and its spin-offs — Metro: Last Light and Metro Exodus — are first-person shooters set in the ruins of Moscow after a vast nuclear war. The plot is based on Dmitry Glukhovsky’s Metro 2033 novel that describes survivors living in Moscow’s underground subway tunnels 10 years after the big war.
Metro 2033 Redux (from 2014) is a vast improvement to the original 2010 game. According to Rock, Paper, Shotgun, the updated version most notably offers an improvement to the stealth mechanic. “Just because one enemy detects evidence of your skulking doesn’t mean every single one of them will psychically know where to pinpoint you from then on,” the review states. “Even after blowing a stealth run, you have a chance to melt back into the shadows and reposition, or quickly neutralize the enemies who spotted you before they can alert the others. It makes for more satisfying sneaking and the A.I. is both better and more forgiving.”
The original game currently enjoys a 81/100 Metacritic score while the improved Redux version is sitting pretty at 90/100. In other worlds, this one is certainly worth getting, even if it wasn’t free.
But it is! Head over to the Epic Games Store from now until December 23 at 11 a.m. ET to grab your own free version for the PC. And check back with their sale every day until it ends on January 7th for another daily free game as well as $10 coupons toward other Epic games.
