Kenny Is Not Annie’s Dad

At this point when we saw Annie’s scene, she and Reiner and Bertholdt were already deep undercover. We just saw Reiner and Berthold talking with the man who hung himself (and subsequently adopting his background story as their own.) Now we see what Annie’s doing and her own “fake background” story to cover her tracks. The group’s mission is to discover and bring back the Founding Titan. We learned earlier in this series that Kenny was in deep with the royal family, and Annie must have been in the process of tracking that connection down.

So when Kenny caught Annie trying to spy on him, she tried to come up with a cover story. She lied and told him that she was tracking him because he was her dad. But Kenny didn’t buy that story for a second. He’s too smart for that play.

By the way, there’s really no room for thinking that Kenny might be Annie’s dad. We saw Annie’s dad in flashbacks, and we saw much more of her backstory in the OVAs. The OVA episodes aren’t on Hulu, so they were easy to miss. Her dad is definitely not Kenny Ackerman.

And here’s a flashback of her dad that we saw in Season 1.

The show has made it quite clear that Kenny’s not her dad. That was just a cover story she came up with to explain why she was following him.

There are several discussions about it that you can find on Reddit, such as here below:
