Sensor Tower announced this week that mobile games set in a post-apocalyptic world grew by 106% from Q1 to Q3 of this year, making it the fastest growing game setting by revenue in the mobile games market.
Of course this is exciting for us, as we find ourselves rather fond of the whole end-of-the-world thing, but it also shows a marked upward trend for our favorite genre that is not supposed to stop any time soon.
Sensor Tower’s Store Intelligence feature processes algorithms and “hundreds of millions of data points” to analyze mobile gaming trends for both Apple’s App Store and the Google Play store. “For this report, we looked at the top 100 revenue-generating titles by each descriptor to identify the top performers,” Sensor Tower’s website proclaims. “These new features provide publishers with another powerful data set to utilize in their analyses that enable a deeper look into the market and their competitors.”
The top games in the genre include State of Survival from FunPlus and Last Shelter: Survival from Long Tech. Plague Inc. was another breakthrough hit, seemingly as interest in the real world plague grew. Sales of the game grew so quickly back in January that the game’s developers, Ndemic Creations, had to release a statement announcing that the game is just a game, not a scientific model for coronavirus.
These games, and others in their category, saw revenue rise to approximately $384 million this year. To understand how significant and impressive these numbers are, realize that the second fastest growing setting (Modern) only saw a 51% growth, so post-apocalyptic more than doubled that.
