After a failed attempt at turning the popular post-apocalyptic comic book series Sweet Tooth into a television show, Hulu gave up the comic’s rights to Netflix who plan to release an adaptation of their own soon.
Sweet Tooth was originally the story of a boy named Gus who lives with a genetic mutation in a post-apocalyptic world. With antlers and other deer features, Gus struggles to adapt to life on his own after his father passes away from the same contagion that wiped out most of the rest of the world. Luckily for him, he’s taken in by a hardened scavenger named Jeppard who shows Gus the ropes.
But this new adaptation, which will also be coming to DC’s more mature Black Label brand, is set 300 years after the end of the original comic book series that ran from 2008 to 2013. There will still be a deer-like main character, but this one will be haunted by unexplained visions of Jeppard.
Written and illustrated by Jeff Lamire, the series was originally contracted for 12 issues, but ran up to 40 due to its popularity. This new Netflix series will run an initial eight episodes through Warner Bros. Television and Robert Downey Jr’s production company, Team Downey. Stars announced so far for the project include Christian Convery as Gus, Nonso Anozie as Jeppard, Adeel Akhtar as Doctor Singh, Will Forte as Gus’ father and Dania Ramirez as Aimee.
Filming for the show was postponed due to the big C, so a release date has not yet been announced.
