The Top 10 Post Apocalyptic Movies on Netflix – 2017 Edition

meteor banner top 10 movies on netflix

Don't even think about sharing this article.

We looked through every single post apocalyptic movie on Netflix to find you the best of the best. If it’s about species survival or the end of the world, and it’s good, we probably have it listed here.  We cast a wide net so dystopia, end of the world, alien invasion, and robot uprising – it’s all fair game.

Below you’ll find:

(1) the Top 10 Post Apocalyptic Movies you can watch right now on Netflix followed by

(2) an indiscriminate list of all the movies in the post apocalyptic genre that Netflix has available.

Introduction to the 2017 Top Ten List

I want to be begin by pointing out that of our Top Ten from 2016, all but two movies have been removed. That’s right – Netflix went red wedding on our list. A slap in the face, if you will. And now we’re starting from scratch. We’ve got a brand new Top 10. Not a single repeat from last year. And many apologies to the Armageddon fans out there. When a ballad by Aerosmith is the most memorable part of your movie, then something went terribly wrong. It’s just not good. That is why Armageddon, once again for 2017, did not make our Top 10 list.

But while Netflix continually drops great post apocalyptic titles from their movies category, they are actually doing quite well in the TV series department. In fact, they carry several currently airing series like The 100 and The Walking Dead. Check out our Top 10 TV Series on Netflix here.

It’s true that Netflix has dropped a lot of good post apocalyptic shows (personal outrage list at the end), but you can still find some great end-of-the-world cinema for instant streaming.  At the end, I’ve added a list of shows I found on my Netflix “viewed” list that are now unavailable for streaming. #BringThemBackNetflix because there are some really good shows on that list.

DISCLAIMER: This list was made on January 3 2017, and it may not be accurate the very next day. That’s because Netflix is constantly changing their catalogue. BUT I’ll try to keep this list updated all year, so if you see something good on Netflix that I don’t have; please let me know about it in the comments, via email, or in the web form on our Tips page.

Post Apocalyptic scene from the Road movie

Starring Viggo Mortensen of Lord of the Rings fame, a man and his son are forced to navigate a dangerous post apocalyptic wasteland in this movie adaptation of a popular post-apocalyptic novel. A stark contrast to the fast-paced action and adventure of a Mad Max film, the Road chooses to focus on suffering, the sorrow, and the tough choices.

Post Apocalyptic scene from v for vendetta the movie

V for Vendetta is a classic dystopian movie about oppressive government, but it is also post nuclear war. I both love and hate this movie.

It has great cinematography, there’s Natalie Portman, the story is solid and suspenseful. But the pacing seems all out of whack. I don’t get real attached to the characters. And at times, I think I felt a little uncomfortable thinking about how their dystopian government looks a little too much like my own real government.

Post Apocalyptic scene from Halo fall of reach movie

I love the Halo story.  I not only played the games, but I also read several of the Halo books. I played though most of the games, but most importantly I watched all the cutscenes from each game on Youtube. Remastered Halo II is a must-watch for all fans of the series.

The books were really good. They are full of high scifi concepts mixed with tales of heroism. You don’t have to play the games to enjoy these novels.

The Fall of Reach is a true-to-the-book story of the selection and training of the Spartan soldiers – children who were chosen by the government to undergo genetic mutations in order to save humanity. They are subjected to dangerous medical testing. They were truly humans made into weapons; their lives robbed from them for the greater good.

This was all necessary in order to use the Spartan armor. Spartan armor multiplies your strength and even interfaces with your mind. The downsize is that once you’ve installed the spartan armor on your body – there’s no taking it off. It’s a lifelong commitment. This is the story of Spartans before they put on the suit.

Post Apocalyptic scene from Judge Dredd the Movie.

By the 2080s, much of Earth has become an uninhabitable wasteland. While some humans manage to survive in the barren “Cursed Earth”, the majority of humanity resides in huge Mega-Cities with populations of tens of millions. To combat crime, the traditional justice system has been replaced by a corps of Judges whose role combines those of police officer, judge, jury, and executioner.

Don’t be scared away by the low approval rating. This movie is dystopian and violent. It has the comic stylings of Rob Schneider and the raw emotion of Sylvester Stallone. Sure it’s not a masterpiece – but it’s still better than the reboot.

Netflix ONCE had these post apocalyptic movies and TV Shows.

While writing this, I decided that a good place to start would be browsing my own Netflix history – which amazingly went back to 2009. It was fascinating, but also a bit depressing to see how many post apocalyptic movies and tv shows that Netflix has dropped. I think you’ll agree that our Top 10 list would look a lot different if these titles were still available. In my opinion, 10 of the top 10 movies on this page are in the list below. Remember, this is just from my own view history, so there’s probably way more than this.

    1. Surprised by the low rating for The Giver. It was quite good.

I’d move These Final Hours into the top 10. It was excellent.

    2. I have noticed you don’t monetize your site, don’t waste your traffic,
you can earn extra bucks every month because you’ve got hi quality content.

    3. I’ve always been a fan of these movies and I can’t get enough of them. I’ve seen about half of the ones you have listed here and I know there are many more to choose from. Also, I know that I’ll have to see about updating my movie service as the one I have now doesn’t have a whole lot of movies on it.
